Design of Optical Layer Systems

Optical layers are often multi-layered. They serve to set the optical properties of a surface, such as reflection, transmission, absorption. The function of an optical layer system is based on both the interference phenomenon and the intrinsic properties of the layer and substrate materials, such as absorption.

Using layer design, it is possible to calculate a layer system which optimally meets the predetermined spectral function. Of key importance are the selection of layer materials, the analysis, synthesis, refinement and tolerancing.

The Fraunhofer IOF possesses extensive knowledge of the optical, mechanical and chemical properties of substrate and layer materials as well as corresponding design software, using which layer systems are designed, refined and optimized.
