Public Workshop "Optical Fibers"

Fraunhofer IOF is one of the leading research institutes in the field of laser and fiber technology.

Competencies in this field range from the design and simulation of all aspects of fibers and fiber lasers to the fabrication of specialized fibers and their application in laser systems, fiber sensors and telecommunication applications.

Renowned results include high power applications as well as tailored properties of photonic crystal fibers. In addition, special technologies and devices are developed at the institute to support the handling and application of novel fibers.

Based on this expertise, our experts offer up-to-date knowledge in our workshops and further education offers.

In addition to public scheduled workshops with a fixed program, which we offer from time to time, we also offer customized formats, which are specifically tailored to the needs and target groups of companies. These include targeted topics which, depending on the target agreement, can be worked on within one day or also in formats lasting several days.

With our experience, we can make appropriate suggestions to provide you with the most effective support meeting your needs. Contact us and we will discuss the possibilities to design the optimal offer for you together.

In addition to this structure, various other forms are possible, such as a compact workshop in four to five days or teaching units spread over several weeks. In addition, teaching elements can also be conducted online.

Benefits and Learning Objectives

The benefits and the specific goal of the course depend on your individual wishes and specifications, as well as on the prerequisites that the participant or participants bring with them.

Questions that you might ask yourself and that we put to you for coordination are:

  • Do you have a specific concern for which you would like to be advised, or would you like to gain a broad overview for yourself and several colleagues in the context of a further training/workshop?
  • What do you want to accomplish with our help?
  • What previous knowledge do the participant(s) have?
  • Do you want basic or advanced knowledge?
  • Do you want theoretical knowledge and/or practical application in the lab?
  • How much practical relevance do you want?
  • How many people will be trained?
  • What workshop times fit into your operating schedule?

The Objective

Example "Optical Fibers Workshop - Theoretical Background and Practice"

The sample course already described enables participants to:

  • Learn the basics about optical fibers, their light guiding mechanisms and fiber components;
  • Practice handling fibers using various fiber preparation equipment such as polishing, cleaving, and splicing;
  • Learn the background of different measurement techniques for the characterization of fibers;
  • Be able to apply knowledge to the characterization of fibers and critically analyze the results;
  • Understand the process of glass doping for fibers and drawing fibers from preforms.

These objectives refer to the sample course. As a rule, the objectives are formulated at the beginning in order to define the appropriate format based on them. We would be happy to support you in assembling your individual objectives.

Fees and Booking

Contact us directly, for example via the contact form, and we will personally discuss what you need and what makes sense for your topic.

We will provide you with an individual offer, that you commission. The cost per person depends on the objectives, the scope and the content of the format. The participation fee is tax-free according to § 4 No. 22a UstG. After the assignment you will receive an invoice (up to a few days later).

All payments must be made in euros. We only accept bank transfers.

Various forms are possible, such as a compact workshop in four to five days or teaching units spread over several weeks.

In addition, teaching elements can also be conducted online.

Our program is conducted at Fraunhofer IOF in Jena by leading experts in the field of fiber technology.

There are up to approx. 10 places available for a workshop, depending on individual coordination.

Target Group

We coordinate the target group with you individually according to your conditions in the company. As a rule, our workshops are primarily aimed at engineers and scientists who work with optical fibers or who want to expand their knowledge and skills in the field of fiber technology. Basic knowledge in optics is usually assumed.

Individuals, as well as groups of up to 10 people, can be advised or trained depending on your wishes and objectives. In this case, you benefit from individual content that offers maximum added value.

Laser-based endcap splicing.
